Sponsored Athletes

Roy Schott - Ski Fanatic - Black Diamond

Roy grew up in Methven a small farming/ski town at the base of Mt Hutt in the heart of Canterbury. With his dad being a ski instructor he started skiing early in life and has been doing so ever since. As a young kid he started out in ski racing but with no patience for training and a lust for powder moved quickly into freeskiing. Recently Roy has been competing in Big Mountain skiing events around the South Island and hopes to try his luck competing overseas. Roy now works as a ski tech in Methven and can be seen freeriding at his home mountain and around the Canterbury club fields. His major aspiration is to perfect what he is good at, competing in freeski and big mountain comps!

Tom Southen - Ski Fanatic - Black Diamond

Tom Southen is a Canterbury lad currently in his final year at St Andrews College. He is a strong skier who loves competition! He is representing Black Diamond this year, with his favourite ski being the Verdict. He enjoys big mountain and backcountry skiing. This year he will be competing in the Chill series, Junior Nationals and the NZ Open, to name a few!

Competitions he has competed in last season are (2008) school ski team junior nationals’ and the Chill series (placed 4th behind Jeff Small, Tom Dunbar and Fraser McDougall)

Tom enjoys competing and aims to become a professional ski athlete, adventure guide and ski instructor.

Dougal Allan - Multisport Athlete - Osprey

Dougal Allan is a multisport athlete based in Wanaka. He has an Honours degree in Physical Education (Otago) and has been competing to a high level in multisport and adventure racing since 2006. In this time he has won many of New Zealand’s toughest races including the Goldrush, Coast to Coast (2-day), Peak 2 Peak, Wild Moa and Southern Traverse (24 Hour). However he rates his 8th placing in his first Coast to Coast Longest Day this year as his most pleasing performance to date. This has him placed well to crack the top 5 in the 2010 world championship race. Until then Dougal will be seen training and racing around the country as he looks to continue to add experience and race results to his already impressive repertoire. At just 24 years of age, he has plenty of time to achieve his goals in the sport and he is proud to have the Osprey team as an important part of the journey!

Aaron Halstead - Mountain and Ski Guide - Black Diamond

Aaron is an internationally qualified Mountain and Ski Guide (IFMGA) and President of the NZ Mountain Guides Association, and has spent time professionally guiding, climbing and skiing in many regions of the globe including Antarctica, the Himalayas, South America, Europe, Alaska, China, and emerging rock climbing areas (such as Cuba and Vietnam). He began his climbing and skiing career at a young age, growing up amidst the Southern Alps of New Zealand.

Other opportunities have drawn his attention such as attending the World Ice Climbing Cup in 2000, obtaining his Paramedic qualification, co-directing the Telemark Race Series for 4 years, and working with the film industry – including being a lead climbing double on ‘The Vertical Limit’. He currently works as an Avalanche Forecaster in winter and enjoys sharing any mountain environment with clients over the summer months.

The next six months will see Aaron on a voyage negotiating the Eastern Antarctic Plateau by boat from South America to Australia, with many adventures along the way. He will also be mountain guiding in the Everest region of Nepal, ski touring in the high mountains of the Southern Alps, climbing Mt Fuji in Japan (IFMGA AGM) and guiding Mt Cook in New Zealand.

Andy Hoyle - Ski Patroller at Whakapapa - Black Diamond

Andy Hoyle has been professionally working in the mountains for the last 6 years in NZ on Whakapapa Ski Area and for the Aoraki Mount Cook Search and Rescue Team (2 summers). He has a family made up of, Lisa his Wife, Tarn his 11 month old boy and Jet there 3 year old black lab. Andy is originally from Banff, Canada but has been living in this great country for the last 12 years sampling some of the awesome lifestyle that is available here. In the summer he is chasing the sun and rock climbing as much as possible, in the winter it’s all about the snow and ice. Although he has spent some time at university he has chosen to pursue a career in the mountains over work as a geologist – but who knows? It all depends on his knees at this stage…..

In the last 4 years he has been tasked with managing the Safety Services Department here at Whakapapa which includes the ski patrol, trail safety and backcountry guiding teams. This has and continues to be a dream job for Andy as it requires him to be in the alpine environment continually and getting a lot of skiing and some climbing done at the same time. Andy has now completed my NZMGA Ski Stage 1 and is looking to move into backcountry ski guiding possibly in Canada this summer season.

Pat Deavoll - Climber - Black Diamond

Pat began her climbing career in 1976 and has climbed consistently until the present day. She has excelled in mountaineering, rock climbing and technical ice climbing, but is currently concentrating on Himalayan climbing and in particular making first ascents of mountains in remote areas. Over the past seven years she has been on eight expeditions and made five first ascents of unclimbed mountains in Alaska, China, India and Pakistan. This year (2009) she will be heading to Pakistan (for the third year in a row) to attempt the first ascent of the impressive south face of Kampire Dior (7140m).

Pat still rock climbs to a high standard and has been on rock climbing holidays as far afield as Britain, Spain, France, Australia and the USA. In 2001 she completed the first ascent of her hardest climb to date –“Intifada” (grd 28/ 29) and was the New Zealand Women’s Sportclimbing Champion in 1994.

Over the past decade Pat has waterfall ice climbed to a very high level. She has led waterfall ice to grade 7 in the Canadian Rockies,  including lead ascents of highly acclaimed test pieces “Sea of Vapours”(WI 7), Acid Howl (WI 6+) and French Maid (WI 6+) and  completed a significant new route in 2002 called Stuck in the Middle” (M7, WI6).

She has made many first female ascents of classic technical routes in New Zealand, including the Hidden Balfour route (grad 6) on Mt Tasman and Logans Run (grd 6+) on Mt Hicks and also been part of the first female team ascent (with her sister) of the Central Gully of Douglas Peak (grd. 5+) and the South Face of Mt Aspiring (grd. 5).

She has her own blog site: www.patdeavoll.co.nz  where accounts of her expeditions can be read.
